Secure Global Desktop
Except for special circumstances, LLE does not support the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Remote access
is provided to LLE staff through Oracle Secure Global Desktop. This page will guide you through the setup process.

What is Secure Global Desktop?
Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) provides encrypted remote access to your computer(s) at LLE.
What's the difference bewtween VPN and SGD?
VPN opens up the entire network to the remote computer
you use but is only compatible with Windows and Macintosh computers. SGD
allows you to access your work system remotely through most web browsers.
What are the benefits?
SGD provides secure access for more platforms than
VPN.
- It provides better file protection since your home computer never has direct access to the files on your
LLE computer.
- It is much faster than VPN.
- It allows remote access to X/Windows applications through any computer that SGD supports. Since you can
access a PC or UNIX desktop, you can have secure access to the Laser Facility operations web pages.
I need network access for a license server. How will I get to it without VPN?
VPN access will continue to be available until another solution is available.
What do I need to do?
SecurID Key Fob
To access Secure Global Desktop, you will first need a SecurID fob
To request access, send the following information via e-mail to
Computer Support:
- Your LLE e-mail address
- Your name
- Whether or not you need a SecurID key fob
- The list of PCs you wish to access.

If you previously used Secure Global Desktop, Java is no longer required. Instead, you will
need to download the client software from our site. The client software only needs to be installed once.
Open a browser window and connect to https://desktop.lle.rochester.edu, then follow the
instructions for your operating system. If you can't connect, contact CSG for help. Afterwards, you can
watch the on-line tutorial below for a detailed walkthrough of how to connect to a Windows, Linux, or UNIX
workstation located at LLE.
Windows Installation Instructions
Open https://desktop.lle.rochester.edu in your web browser and click on the 4th link down
to go to the client download page.
Click on the link the Microsoft Windows section.
Save the file in a convenient location. Your system will probably default to your Downloads
folder but you can use whatever you like. Click Save and continue.
Run the installer from the location you saved it to. If you use Firefox, the downloads window will be
displayed. Double click on the file name to launch the installer.
You can safely ignore this warning. Click Run.
The installer dialog is displayed. Click Next >.
Select Install for Everyone and click Next >.
Accept the default location and click Next >.
Click Next >.
Click Close to finish the installation.
Click on Secure Global Desktop in the Start Menu.
Make note of this URL: https://desktop.lle.rochester.edu/sgd. The extra
/sdg at the end is necessary for the client to conect properly. Type or paste it in the
dialog box and click Connect
.
Type in your username and for the password enter your PIN+SecurID .
The Webtop is displayed and your Secure Global Desktop session is ready. If a windows pops up asking for
permission to run the application, go ahead and click Run.
Click on the PC your want to connect to. If you do not see the PC name you need, contact
CSG to have it added to your list.
Type in your normal username and password just as if you were loggin on to your desktop at work.
Your desktop session will be displayed and you're ready to work.
